Bequests & Beneficiary Designations

A bequest is an easy way to support Red Door's no-kill work and to leave a loving legacy to animals. A bequest from a will or a trust distribution to Red Door is tax-deductible and usually exempt from gift and estate taxes. It is recommended that you consult your attorney when you write or amend a will or form a trust so that the documents conform to the laws in the state where you reside.

An unrestricted bequest will allow Red Door Animal Shelter to use your gift wherever it is most needed at the time. You can choose a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. We suggest the following language in wills:

"I give and bequeath the sum of $____ to Red Door Animal Shelter, an Illinois not-for-profit located at 2410 W. Lunt, Chicago, IL 60645 to be used for its general charitable purposes. Red Door's tax ID # is 36-4248178."

OR

"I give and bequeath ____% of my estate to Red Door Animal Shelter, an Illinois not-for-profit located at 2410 W. Lunt, Chicago, IL 60645 to be used for its general purposes. Red Door's tax # is 36-4248178."

Red Door can also be named as the beneficiary on a life insurance policy, a certificate of deposit, an IRA account, or a trust. In order to pursue this way of supporting Red Door Animal Shelter, contact your bank or insurance company for the paperwork to update your beneficiary. To create a trust, please consult your attorney so that this can be done in accordance with the laws in your state.

Bequests will be memorialized at the shelter, if so requested.
