Top Ten Volunteer Needs

Laundry. We generate 6-10 loads of laundry a day. Laundry is done at the shelter. We need volunteers to do laundry, fold and put away clean laundry. We always need help with the laundry, but particularly on the weekends.

Driving. We need volunteers with valid Illinois driver's licenses and reliable cars. Volunteers will accompany shelter animals to scheduled veterinary appointments. Also volunteers will do animal drop-off and pick-up from a spay/neuter clinic. Some volunteers will also be asked to be on call in case of emergency. The busiest times for drivers are weekends, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Shelter Shopping. We need volunteers to help with biweekly shopping trips to pet supply stores like Petsmart or Petco. We also need volunteers for bimonthly shopping trips to Sam's Club and weekly shopping trips for fresh produce for the rabbits. A Sam's Club shopper should have a large car. The times we most need help with the shopping are weekends and Wednesday or Thursday.

Animal Caretaking. We need dependable volunteers to help provide for the daily care of the shelter animals. Duties include scooping or washing litter pans, sweeping and mopping the floors, cleaning cages, and feeding the animals. We most need volunteers who are willing to commit to one morning or one evening shift per month.

Foster Homes. We need foster homes, particularly for dogs, and also for special needs animals. Typically, special needs animals include shy or aggressive animals and animals with health and/or behavioral issues. Foster homes provide a safe place for animals to heal and to learn to trust people. The amount of time and type of care can vary.

Veterinary Technicians. We need experienced vet techs to give vaccinations and provide supportive care to our shelter animals under the guidance of the Medical Director.

Phone Calls. We always need help answering the phone and returning messages. We answer the phones between 12-4 daily. We need volunteers who are willing to commit to one afternoon shift per month. Phone volunteers must respect the policies of the Red Door Animal Shelter. Training will be provided.

Adoptions. We need experienced volunteers to help with adoptions. Volunteers will help check references, introduce the animals, interview applicants, and make follow-up calls. Adoption volunteers must agree to respect the policies of the Red Door Animal Shelter. Training will be provided. Adoption volunteers must be willing to commit to at least one evening or weekend shift per week.

Special Events. We need responsible, polished volunteers to represent the Red Door Animal Shelter at pet shows, pet supply stores, adoption events, street fairs, and other fundraising and public events. Special events volunteers must be willing to respect the policies of the Red Door Animal Shelter. Most special events take place in the evenings or on the weekends.

Special Projects. We need responsible, self-motivated volunteers to take on a variety of projects, such as: helping solicit donations, building our donor base, recruiting volunteers, and/or assisting with ongoing fundraising efforts. Special projects volunteers must be willing to respect the policies of Red Door Animal Shelter. Hours are flexible.
