Cat or Rabbit Caretaker
Time Periods When Assistance is Needed
- Daily: 10 a.m. through 12 p.m. or 2 p.m. through 4 p.m.
- Caretakers are asked to complete a 2 hour shift and commit to a regular weekly or monthly schedule.
Related Tasks
- Assist staff in maintaining the comfort and cleanliness of all the rabbits and cats in adoption rooms.
- Assist staff by cleaning litterboxes and bowls, doing laundry, filling water bowls, and ensuring clean bedding and plenty of toys are in each room.
- Socialize cats and rabbits in pens and adoption rooms.
- Make notes about the animals' behavior for use by staff and potential adopters.
- Alert staff to any issues of medical concern.
- Other related assistance, as directed by the Red Door staff.
Special Capabilities Needed
- Must be able to provide friendly, knowledgeable customer service and to answer questions in a professional manner, deferring to staff if the correct answer isn't clear or if guidance is needed.
- Must be able to learn and use safe animal handling practices when interacting with the animals.
- Must be able to learn and retain various protocols and follow direction, working with very little direct supervision.
Training
All volunteers who help as Animal Caretakers must first attend the volunteer orientation and complete 2 training/job shadowing shifts with senior Animal Caretaking volunteers or shelter staff.
Commitment
Animal Caretaking volunteers are asked to assist in this area for 2 hour sessions and commit to a weekly or monthly schedule for a minimum of three months, though they are welcome to stay as long as they want. Volunteers are asked to give the Volunteer Coordinator two weeks prior notice if they no longer wish to work as an Animal Caretaker.
